Can poetry be an instrument of social and cultural change? Why or why not?
People are instruments of social and cultural change. Maybe a poem can help give someone the courage to change. Maybe the existence of poetry can help a culture thrive, and thriving demands change. Poetry can perturb, challenge, calm, excite, open a person to rise to challenges that help them thrive in their own lives. But some poetry can also lull, and make readers less likely to question. The person who wants change might throw down the poetry that lulls. Or they might need it to relax from the strains they are under at times. Poetry can help us see differently than we did before we read the poem...who knows why this happens. If we see differently, then maybe we can change...
