if i had a dollar....

for every time this kid ended up bloody after encountering a spiky plant.....

Seriously, it happens at least once a decade. You should have seen his butt after he fell on a cactus circa 1994.

WOMENwatch2008!

On TOUR: 11/20/08 Groningen, The Netherlands - Vera w/ Chad VanGaalen

My thoughts exactly!

Or, try some Ingrish, courtesy of BabelFish:

There is something strange to the hand with Chad VanGaalen. You it negative are able approach by saying that Canadian singer/songwriter want too much. I hou it rather that he is of all markets at home. And Chad VanGaalen are on so much areas really talented, choose which he does not have also. Vangaalen are beside bandsman, in whatever quality he is here vanavond of course, expressive artist. Illustrator for exact to be. The one which are interested gladly refer I by to the Crossing festivalfestival festival in The Hague, where on the podium VanGaalen to not only admire is, but where also an exhibition has arranged with its illustrations. He the poster for the festival has tevens devised. Still a must is the video clip that he himself made for its current forty-five at Light.

Now I have then nevertheless made this bruggetje to its music, I can tell right that VanGaalen are also within its music a thousand leg. Chad VanGaalen have constantly spent the past fifteen years such a smattering in its cellar, which he has filled with instruments and equipment. To own say he material has for that taken more than eighty albums. god they thanks is he no Robert Pollard that each scheet brings out, but he only its állerállerbeste songs has selected for the three albums that he so far brought out.

Nice of its albums, but especially newest `soft Airplane', are that it zomaar a random collection songs is not, but that is it well reflected concerning advancement and environment. Thus there of course spot for the weirde electronics is which seems VanGaalen themselves make kindest, but in the meantime he sings also it one after the other splendid song. But correctly if you feel that it becomes time stock a they track, or new sounds or instruments to use, VanGaalen do that also.

From its songs becomes clear that VanGaalen do not face the future really rosy. That he in its texts calls the pictures do now and then think of the work of dooming thinker such as Orwell, Huxley or more recent Michel Houellebecq. Or he now sings concerning a coma patient, who can dream only still (`Clinically Dead'), underworlds in which their heart has coupled people to a blood machine (`Blood Machine'), in fire put of its body after its dead (`Willow Tree'), or concerning sounds which he hears in the cellar but not weet or its neighbour man its dog maltreats or simply complete trumpet plays (`Cries badly or the Dead'), lively is its subject choice never. However, weet he continuously back and forth you to swing of admiration for its inventive songs and instrument to tenderising by its beautiful, sometimes what infirm voice. In fact you can define Chad VanGaalen still best as what you would get if you Neil Young for 15 would lock up years in a cellar full musical toy. Brilliant moving music therefore! And then that to consider music for VanGaalen came many years' on the second spot. For this reason, and also because he is rather timid, the arriving European tour is just is very first. And since this action is the first of the tour, is see Chad VanGaalen vanavond official for the first time in Europe. Furthermore he only plays Border in the Netherlands on already sold off Friday of Crossing.

As second headliner (bowl therefore on time!) the new Canadian link Women comes along, where Niek in the previous Verakrant were already very enthusiastic concerning. He praised the link their scouring noise, gruizige jet ears, soundscapes and thoughtful song lines, where must think you of what gelijkgestemden as Deerhunter, No Age and Times New Viking to do. The debut plate of Women has been also once more produced by nobody less than our large friend Chad VanGaalen. The four men of Women could come play Chad at uncle in the cellar with all possible equipment to take a fantastic album with that. Only moan that the album but a half hour lasts.

Even the CD sleeve – a creepily synchronised group tai chi exercise in a communist state – appears to have been designed to maximum disruptive effect and with minimal regard for mass appeal.

Yah, I know, you're sick of me blogging about WOMEN.

Well, what's a girl to do when she's only got one sibling and he's off touring the world with his not-quite famous low-fi indie band? I kinda miss the kid.

Herewith, some press and pictures. (See me in the photo by ryan wagner? Behind Matt's head. Neurotically playing with my earring and trying to elbow the kid next to me. I don't care if he 'knows them from Calgary,' buddy was bouncing all over the place with his camera. Highly annoying.)

Chris disagrees with the 'low-fi' label, admits the guys are music assholes in an About.com Alt Music interview

Treblezine
album review says one solid listen is all it takes to hear the genius within.

Sustained bursts of noise, drones, crashing and clattering loops and general textural fuckery (yes!) on Yelling About Music.

This Canadian Press article has been picked up in various places. This just in: Calgary not just Nashville North. Holy fuck, for reals?!

Nothing can kill the giddy buzz of a band's virgin cross-country tour like an uninspired gig in the middle of nowhere. Calgary Herald Sled Island Festival Spotlight.

comes closest to capturing the spirit of the band, I think. And the article contains my favourite Chris-related quote of all time ... his parents met at a fucking Captain Beefheart concert. That’s the perfect way to sum Chris up. I don't know if I think that's true, but I do know that every time I converse with Pat, we discuss a) the impeccable character of my brother, and b) the impossible coolness of my father. (OMG Tim!) Ergo, this quote, actually the entire interview, is classic Pat.

More to follow on WOMENwatch2008!. In the meantime, I leave you with two fanfreakintastic music videos. The first taken at the El Mocambo show in Toronto on Oct. 4, and the second uploaded by a fellow called randykkubo. Lovely.

yay, WOMEN!

Proud sister follows WOMEN's accolades (and less-than-accolades-but-hey-it's-all-press) at CMJ 2008 in New York:

Great video (below) and review, "those Canadians lived up to all the hype"from Pop Tarts Suck Toasted.

SPIN says record awesome, but band failed to connect. (Ah well, the photos are nice.)

'Black Rice' is a "scuzz on the beach jam" (in a good way -- with great pics!) at Stereogum

An apparent thumbs-up (uh....the kids still say that, yeah?) from Ear Farm: "Yes, there’s been much talk about this band of late – particularly in relation to their endless spate of CMJ shows and snowballing hype that’s resulted – but goddamn if they don’t deserve all/most of it."

Vancouver, BC According to... Stephen Lyons!

CBC Radio 3's Vish Kanna interviews Stephen Lyons, local musician and impresario, who comments thoughtfully and articulately on the current state of our town's music scene.

My favourite bit:
Well, there is something exciting about going to an illegal venue created by people who want to showcase art and music and let people have fun. People want and need to interact with art and with each other, and people that run these venues take quite a risk in order to fulfill that fundamental human need, because it's not getting fulfilled in the mainstream culture. The frustration comes in waves, when these places send out their "we've been shut down" notices. There are a lot of obstacles to putting on shows, opening venues, etc, in Vancouver, and the bylaws and regulations can wear down the spirits of some of the most committed artists and presenters. Hence the exodus the arts community has seen over the past few years.

WOMEN on Said the Gramaphone

This band's name makes it awkward to talk about them, which I'm sure is intentional. Women are from Alberta. Women are men. Women made Women. It's a very interesting little record. Women decided to make it only 29 minutes long. But not in that "19 tracks in 18 minutes" bark punk kind of way. No, it's half songs half ambience, which is both very effective and inevitably a bit too clever. "Cameras" is the introduction to Women, and to Women. And it's pretty exciting. Only a minute long and I want to listen to more Women. Keep reading

WOMEN live @ the Marquee in Halifax: review on Herohill

If the early buzz on the impossible to Google, Calgary-based band WOMEN is any indicator, these young dogs can hunt.
Mixing experimental noise bursts with surprising groove filled riffs and crushing percussion, this four-piece is going to be one on the lips of a slew of critics at year end.

Here's the skinny. We were waiting to talk about them because they played here in Halifax last night and they are the type of band that becomes that much better when the adrenaline starts flowing. Well that, and to be honest, we didn't think they'd catch on so fast. The staccato bursts and challenging listen doesn't usually translate for such a quick embrace in Blogtown USA, especially when it's a young band from Alberta. BLACK RICe on MP3 Hugger

The Beach Boys, Cosmic Rough Riders and now Women, yep at last we have a beautifully formed hat-trick of bands with which to soak up anything the summer can throw at us. ‘Black Rice’ is undeniably retro but so honed with ripe melody it ends up with no black marks. Inextricably linked with Chad VanGaalen (he was involved in the recording) the Canadian 4 piece are due to release their eponymous debut in July. Keep reading

WOMEN on Burning World

It has to be said that this record does not look particularly inspiring from the outside. In fact I would go as far as to say this is probably the worst record sleeve I've seen all year (and believe me I've seen some shite). Still, you know what they say about books and covers and all that, well it seems the same applies to records and sleeves because once you've got past the sleeve and the band name and actually listened to the record you'll find that it's actually a pretty damn fine noise.

WOMEN on Rose Quartz: Directory of Purgatoire

So lotsa of bros been bloggin' about this new album from Canadian band Women but I'd only managed to hear two tracks, those being 'Black Rice' and 'Group Transport Hall'. Now I've got the whole record, and it's much more than I'd expected from what I heard on these two. If part of the purpose of blogs is to post both the best songs to provide an example of the aesthetic and ethos of an album (or, you know, just 'the vibe of it') then Women sidestep it big time with their terrifically stylistically diverse new album. Here's Some Good Advice, Listen to Women...The Walrus Music Blog

Specifically, the music of Women, a foursome hailng from Alberta, Canada whose psychedelic dirge "Black Rice" keeps creeping into my playlists. Sounding like The Shins on morphine, it swells with a blissful beat, shiny bells and a general sense of melancholy that would make Lou Reed feel right at home.
(posted by Michael on the Walrus Music Blog)

this band has been spending too much time in the basement: WOMEN in A'n'E Vibe

If you have a blurry line between what constitutes noise and what constitutes music, then you will like this strange album from the boys in a band called Women.

Recorded using ghetto blasters, old tape machines in a basement as well as in an outdoor culvert and a crawlspace, Women create music, which is at times more like noise.

Although you could argue that music can be created through random banging and clanging, there is the flipside where anyone could go in their basement and play around with passé stereo equipment and make an album. Keep reading

female ejaculation: WOMEN in FFWD

Calgary band Women talk the same way they play. Brothers Pat and Matt Flegel, who play guitar and bass, respectively, don’t have much place for boundaries or conversational convention. They interrupt each other repeatedly, derailing trains of thought and going on occasionally ludicrous tangents.
