Something about elephants in a snowy woodland area just seems... a little bit off, wouldn't you say?
Off as in, abnormal? Sure it does.
BUT those elephants wouldn't even be in North America if someone hadn't killed their families and taken them to this continent for indentured slavery (i.e., the circus) or caged life (i.e., the zoo).
Elephants are highly social animals with complex relationships and emotions not unlike our own, and they also need large geographical spaces in which to roam.
At the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, where this picture is from, the elephants are free from abuse and torture and free to wander wherever they choose on the 2700 acre property. It's not the same as the tight family units in which they would have spent their natural lives - up to 70 years of age, but it's likely the next best thing.
